MARCH 2018

Winston Churchill once said “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”. In Australia last year, figures released indicate that less people are donating to charities and not-for-profits. Some possible issues may be related to stagnant wage growth for lower income workers but also there has been a dramatic increase in on-line and poker machine gambling resulting in lower and middle-class family incomes being drastically reduced.

This, in turn, makes life difficult for many of the charities and not-for-profits who struggle to receive the funds necessary for their organisation or the organisations they support and whilst we can’t say for certain, this may be the reason a number of charities have had to close their doors.

Is there any good news on this front? Well in fact the answer is yes as Corporate Australia donations have increased as well as those individuals who do donate, are donating more. Is there any real cause for concern? Again, the answer is yes. For many of the larger charities the lack of dollars lost to the dropping number of donors, whilst of concern, won’t have a dramatic, overall affect.

The problem really exists for the smaller charities, any decrease in the number of donors, has a diabolical impact and, as individuals, we must become more attuned to the needs of this group if Australia is to live up to it’s age old reputation of “being good givers”.

DA$AW Inc. is managed & run solely by volunteer effort so that all donations received (other than Membership fees and Sponsorship donations or effort) will go to our selected charities/causes – a different charity each month!
