AUGUST 2018 - #1
Live Below the Line – Oaktree is a fundraising campaign that helps Australians take action on poverty. It is a challenge that sparks thousands of conversations about poverty across Australia.
Extreme poverty can be a tough issue to get your head around. There are 1.3 billion people living on just $2 a day - that’s over 50 times the population of Australia. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the size of the problem.
Live Below the Line is a simple way to better understand extreme poverty and make a real impact.
Live Below the Line began in 2010 as a way of enabling Australians to engage with the issue of poverty and to take meaningful action on it. Since then, over 50,000 Australians have raised more than $10 million for education and campaigning initiatives that help fight poverty.
This year, thousands of participants put change on the menu by feeding themselves on $2 a day for five days. That’s the Australian equivalent of the extreme poverty line. By taking the Live Below the Line challenge, these young people raised much-needed funds for work that helps end poverty.
Live Below the Line is all about creative cooking, rationing and caffeine deprivation: It’s just a glimpse into what life is like for people in poverty, not a real experience of it. But they know that what they do has a real impact.
