Our selected charity for April is Muscular Dystrophy SA (MDSA) a not for profit organisation that offers a range of services to children and adults living with neuromuscular conditions.
What is Muscular Dystrophy?
The muscular Dystrophies are a group of genetic diseases that cause weakness and muscle wasting, primarily in the skeletal or voluntary muscles (those we control such as the muscles of the arms and legs).
Most people with muscular dystrophy experience some degree of muscle weakness during their lifetimes, but each affects different muscle groups and may have different accompanying symptoms. Because muscle weakness usually progresses over time in the muscular dystrophies, lifestyle changes, assistive devices and occupational therapy may be needed to help a person adapt to new situations.
These conditions create enormous challenges for sufferers and their families/carers.
Muscular Dystrophy South Australia facilitates a number of regular condition-specific support groups that provide the opportunity for people with a neuromuscular condition and/or their friends and family to develop relationships with people who share similar experiences.
